Brandenburger Tor: Take advantage of the sunset
  • Tip Rating:
  • To walk along Unter den Linden with the Brandenburg Tor as a destination may be a charming experience at the end of the afternoon: the special quality of the light gives the area a kind of romantic look. If you are lucky, you could take some beautiful photographs with the sun looming through the Tor.

Hackesche Höfe: Largest courtyard complex in Europe
  • Tip Rating:
  • This group of building are linked by several passages which communicate 8 rear courtyards very nicely decorated. There are cafes, shops, hairdressers and a lot of people, of course. The most beautiful is Courtyard One, designed in Art Nouveau style. Good place for having a drink and enjoying the local ambience.

    Things To Do: Hackescher Markt
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is one of the most attractive S-Bahn Stations in Berlin. Red bricks and a tiled-facade with round windows are what you see from the square, with a lot of bars, restaurants and cafes. It's a good idea to take S-Bahn to Hackescher Markt, visit Hackesche Hofe complex and then take your way to Oranienburgerstrasse and visit the sinagoge.

Rotes Rathaus: In an area with plenty of things to see
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Berliner City Town Hall is located just beside Nikolaiviertel, a few meters from Berlin Cathedral and Museuminsel. It was constructed on the last half of XIXth century, in the style of Italian High Renaissance, according to the plan of Waesemann. The adjective Rotes (red) has no political reason: the hole building is made with red brick. It was seriously damaged in Second World War, but now it is totally restored. The photo is taken from the Cathedral roof.

Berliner Dom (Berlin Cathedral): Powerful building
  • Tip Rating:
  • It was built in the late years of XIXth century as a Protestant answer of Prussian monarchy to San Peter in Rome. Kaiser Wilhem II wished a sumptuously decorated building and he got it, in spite of the criticism it arose. A lot of members of Hohenzoller royal family are buried at the Cathedral crypt. There is an admission fee of 5 euros (3 euros for tickets with reductions). Opening times vary with season, but it's generally open from 9 to 19 from Monday to Saturday and from 12 to 19 on Sundays.

Berliner Dom (Berlin Cathedral): The Altar
  • Tip Rating:
  • It was very damaged in Second World War and it was recently restored. Well, it's not my favorite kind of church (I am a fan of gothic and romanesque styles), but I really liked the altar and I spent some minutes to take a "visible" photo with my brand new camera, which by that time I didn't know very well yet.

Berliner Dom (Berlin Cathedral): Dome gallery, enjoy city sights
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is an open Dome Gallery from where you can enjoy superb sights. If you have not done sightseeing yet, the beauties seen from the gallery might provide you some inspiration for your next visits. If you have already done most of sightseeing, you will have fun looking at those places from heights. But be aware that you will have to climb 267 steps: there is not elevator. From my point of view, it is worth the effort.

    Museumsinsel (Museum Island): Altes Nationalgallerie
  • Tip Rating:
  • This beautifully done temple-like building, with a monumental exterior staircase was opened at 1876. Seriously damaged during Second World War, although it has been reconstructed on two phases: first, after 1948, and recently, at nineties. It presently houses one of the largest collections of XIXth century picture and sculpture in Germany. It has a good display of Impresionist pictures (Degas, Monet, Cezanne, Renoir...) and some Rodin sculptures. German painters are, of course, thoroughly represented.

Museumsinsel (Museum Island): Pergamonmuseum (I): the most visited
  • Tip Rating:
  • It was opened in 1930 and it is really a MUST if you visit Berlin. Today, it houses three different museums, in fact: the Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities), the Museum fur Islamische Kunst (Museum of Islamic Art) and the jewel, the Vorderasiatisches Museum (Museum of the Ancient Near East). Opening times go from 10,00 to 18,00, except on Thursdays, which opens from 10,00 to 22.00. It closes on Mondays. Admission fee is 6 euros, but do see my tip on three-day ticket for 15 euros, it is worth to buy it.
