The Home of Thomas Jefferson

Monticello was the home of Thomas Jefferson, inventor, gentleman farmer, author of the Declaration of Independence and the third President of the United States. A bit of his history follows:

He was born in 1753. He studied at the college of William and Mary and practiced law. He married Martha Wayles Skelton in 1772 and settled at Monticello where they had six children, only two surviving into adulthood. He served in the House of Burgesses and the Continental Congress and was Governor of Virginia, Minister to France and Secretary of State.

Thomas Jefferson served as President of the United States from 1801-1809 during which time he acquired the territory of Louisiana from Napoleon. When he retired he moved back to Monticello and designed the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

This plantation home was built over a period of many years and features some of his inventions and personal effects. He utilized new farming methods in his fields and gardens and laid a bountiful table for his many frequent visitors. There is much to see as you tour the home and gardens!

It is located 2 miles S.E. of Charlottesville. For more info. 434-984-9800 (recorded message). Admission is $14 for adults; $11 for children 6 and under; free for those under 6. Monticello opens from Mar. 1-Oct.31 from 8 am-5 pm and Nov.1-Feb.28 from 9 am-4:30 pm and is closed on Christmas.

A shuttle takes you from the visitor's center to the top of the hill where it drops you off, then a guide directs a few people at a time to the entrance. The line moves quickly. See: www.monticello. org for more details.

Entrance to Monticello

In the spring of 1808, Thomas Jefferson designed the winding walkway and border of flowers leading up to the front door in the new design of the day--as an informal display.

His original designs included 20 oval-shaped areas that were each planted with a different flower. Some of the types of flowers he used were roses, the Sweet William and double white flowering poppy.

Jefferson's daughters and grand-daughters cared for his gardens with the help of an elderly slave.

Grounds surrounding Monticello

Thomas Jefferson grew 170 fruit varieties including apples, peaches and grapes in two orchards.

The 1000 foot terrace garden at the back of the home held 330 varieties of vegetables.

Monticello showcased his lovely gardens which provided beauty and food for the planation. It was an experimental laboratory of ornamental and useful plants from around the world.

Outstanding introduction! I loved this area as well. But, your descriptions were even better than I remembered.

Monticello is on my must-see list. Thomas seems to have been a wise man.
