Restaurant Name: Seventeen Seventeen
We dropped by Seventeen Seventeen, the Dallas Art Museum's touted gourmet restaurant after seeing 'Tutankhamun--The Golden Age of the Pharaohs' exhibit.
A work-related banquet that included spouses (that's me!) met here following a viewing of the King Tut exhibit. As we entered the restaurant, glistening glasses of chilled wine were offered as clients greeted one another.
We were guided to either tall cocktail tables in the center of the room or cozy banquette seating on the perimeter, where we continued in conversation.
Our repast was temptingtly arrayed in the next room: couscous, chicken, lambchops, several exotic looking salads, veggie tray, cheeses and an assortment of delicious dessert-mini's. The couscous was particularly memorable!
Off the central room an outdoor patio overlooked the main avenue, beautifully lit. Since it was a wonderfully mild evening, the patio was an especially popular location. The food, the service and the atmosphere were all excellent, contributing to a great experience.

Houston's: For Casual Dining

Restaurant Name: Houston's
We met friends at Houston's on our way to the flight museum in Addison. We had great service and bottomless ice tea!
Our friends had heard that their avocado appetizers were delicious, so we ordered them and passed them around the table. This was an avocado in it's true form, steamed or baked (?) and presented on a plate. Each small segment was peeled off and eaten--our friends really enjoyed them, so you might, too!
In all honesty, I don't remember what I ordered (most likely a turkey wrap) because it was over a month ago, but I do remember that it was good. However, I do recall a pleasant conversation with friends in a very nice casual restaurant.

Restaurant Name: Landry's Seafood House
Landry's is a nationally recognized seafood restaurant that first opened its doors in 1980 in Katy, Texas. There are now over 300 restaurants and properties nationwide.
If you like seafood you'll most likely enjoy Landry's. When my mother and sister came for a visit over Thanksgiving, my husband and I took them for a spin around the West End, then toured the JFK exhibit at the 6th Floor Museum. Landry's was located conveniently near these sites, so we dropped by for a bite to eat.
On the menu you'll find all types of seafood dishes like jumbo stuffed shrimp or shrimp scampi, Alaskan King crab legs, lobster tails or crawfish etouffee, filet mignon, steak and lobster, oysters on the half shell, lemon pepper catfish fillets, fish and chips or more simpler meals like Caesar salad, shrimp or seafood gumbo.
Colorful murals overseeing your table and lush plants overflowing their containers add a touch of atmosphere. We dined in a small area that had a greenhouse feel to it. Not only was the service very good, but the food was, too.
Favorite Dish: Fish and Chips--just the right amount of crispness

The Mansion on Turtle Creek: Elegant Dining in 5 Star Hotel

Restaurant Name: The Mansion on Turtle Creek
1000 Places to See Before You Die featured The Mansion on Turtle Creek in its Texas chapter. What better place to take our son when he flew in for the day on a business trip to the states!
The Mansion was originally the estate of Sheppard W. King, president and partner of the cotton brokerage house of King, Collie and Company. Aside from his successful business in cotton, he amassed a fortune in oil.
He and his wife, Bertha Wilcox, moved from Waxahachie, Texas to Dallas in 1891. They built this palatial estate in 1925 in the Italian Renaissance style. It features imported marble, a unique cantilevered stairway and 19th century Spanish cathedral doors, as well as, other distinctive architectural embellishments.
The Rosewood Hotels purchased the King property in 1979 and restored it to its original beauty. The project cost more than $21 million dollars, making it a Dallas landmark.
My husband and I brought our son, Christopher, here to celebrate his visit to the states. He was here on business and since he was only visiting for a day and a half, we wanted to make this a special occasion.
We entered a light filled lobby perfumed with fragrance exuding from assorted flowers gracefully displayed in huge ceramic urns. From this area, we moved to the restaurant where we were led to an elongated glassed veranda overlooking a pretty patio.
A toast our son's presence with Mimosa's, then we turned our attention to the menu. As an appetizer, I ordered the tropical fruit salad, which was surrounded by a fruit soup crowned with passion fruit sorbet. A crispy yeast waffle topped with strawberries and bananas, drizzled with maple syrup was my entree. Cinnamon ice cream concluded the brunch.
The atmosphere, superb service and the occcasion of meeting with our son made our visit a wonderful one.

The Mercury: Whose chef prepared meals for the White House!

Restaurant Name: The Mercury
The Mercury's executive chef and partner, Chris Ward is acclaimed for his "culinary flair". He once prepared a $25,000 per plate dinner in honor of George H. Bush and Margaret Thatcher plus three White House dinners for President George and Laura Bush. Well, that certainly is an endorsement!
We were invited to join friends at The Mercury on a recent weekend and were impressed with the entire package: a warm and sophisticated decor, prompt waitstaff and a fantastic meal.
Our dinner began with crisp pieces of toasted bread and pate, then onto Caesar salad and scallops which we shared.
Jim's entree was the Black Cod, which was served with a flourish of garnish and sauce. I selected Cracklin' Chicken that arrived looking like a miniature piece of art...arranged ever so beautifully on my plate accompanied by carrots, mushrooms and sauce. Yes, they looked that great!
The dessert menu made it difficult to decide on what to order, so after some discussion we split an Italian Meringue Short Cake topped with tasty strawberries...absolutely delicious, no doubt about it!
