History abounds in Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown

Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown, NY are popular hamlets for sightseeing in NY state. A visitor's center in Sleepy Hollow is the hub for tours to many interesting landmarks. We visited several different times throughout the year to see these four sites:

Philipsburg Manor is a restored home and farm complete with animals and costumed characters demonstrating weaving or other types of processes. This was the center of milling and trade for the area. A bridge takes you there from the visitors center. A tour of the house is provided which is interesting. The property gives young children a chance to run around and burn off steam. I would recommend this site for families with small children. Older children might be a bit bored.

Sunnyside, the former home of Washington Irving. It is this town that was mentioned in his book, Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Guides in period costumes take you through his house and you see the desk he actually used while there. A gift shop is included, as well as a short film detailing your visit. The home and grounds are samples of the Romantic movement. While walking from the gift shop/ticket center to Irving's stone cottage, I felt like the years of time were just peeling away.

Kykuit, is a beautiful mansion once owned by the Rockefellers in the beaux-arts style. The tour takes you through the home and grounds. There are formal gardens and fountains. Artwork and sculptures are on display. Kykuit has a nice view of the Hudson River. The four story mansion is beautiful and the interior lovely. If you want to catch a glimpse of how the upper crust lives, take this tour!

The Lyndhurst Mansion was the residence of Jay Gould who made his fortune with the railroad. The mansion is in the Gothic Revival style. A cafe is on the grounds. The tour begins and you walk up the long, winding driveway to the house. The site is pretty perched on a hill.

All of these historic places open in the Spring and close in the late Fall. The visitor center number is 914-631-9491. **If the weather is good, call ahead to make sure tour times are available. We drove up once only to find all of the tours were booked for that day at one of the homes we wanted to see.
