Jerome sits at an elevation of 5,246 feet atop Cleopatra Mountain. Splendid views can be had from these heights! The gorgeous Verde Valley stretches below and the Mingus Mountains reach to the sky.
Jerome was founded in 1846 and thrived in copper mining. Then bad times came long, the mine closed and Jerome languished. Then in the 1960's things began to change slowly. Today, it's an artsy town!
The streets seem to rise in tiers as they cling to the side of the mountain. Antique shops, boutiques, art galleries and restaurants punctuate the streetscape. Suddenly, it has become a place tourists love to visit.
As we walked to a restaurant, a guide led a group of about 20 people to the site of a historic building. Jerome has come alive and is thriving once again.

Glad to hear Jerome has come alive and is thriving once again. Being a ghost town is one thing, but just being a depressed area is, well, depressing. I once stayed in an old hotel like that in Virginia City, Nevada.
Thank you for stopping by my Sinsheim & Kitzingen pages! Great Verde Valley & Jerome Winery tips here! Also I love the shot of The Connor Hotel gee..goin' to be in AZ again.
A lovely town with a tainted past. Sounds like my kinda town. hehe! Imagine a room from 1898 with wireless internet connections. The ghosts within must be baffled.
A town with a naughty past I see but a good place for some chat too
Often, these side trips turn out to be as delightful as Jerome. Your well written and insightful tips are always a pleasure to read to learn from.
A very interesting little side trip.I am sure you would have enjoyed the winery, wonder if they had Mile High Wine? Nice little shops to browse around in also.
Interesting place :-) I think I drove by once, but didn't pay much attention. Thanks for introducing it to us :-))
