Anguilla really is one marvelous beach after another, and, if you never did anything but lounge around the beaches, it would be easy to buy into the island's hype of being “Tranquility wrapped in blue.” But the island's interior is anything but tranquil. Large scale construction projects have brought a never-ending stream of dump trucks, cement mixers, pickups, and, perhaps most importantly, foreign laborers all of which threaten to alter not just the landscape of Anguilla but Anguillan’s way of life. The place is still light years away from becoming St. Martin/Sint Maarten, but one has to seriously question the wisdom of the construction boom. I fear that in the end it will detract from the island’s charm and, more importantly, from the quality of life of its residents. In the meantime, it’s a great place to escape the crowds and enjoy some truly stunning beaches and delicious, albeit pricey, food.
