Sint Maarten is where Las Vegas (Fremont Street more so than the strip) meets the Caribbean. Flashy casinos, high-end shopping, theme restaurants, strip joints – the Maho Bay area and much of Dutch Sint Maarten is as vulgar as it is fun. Throw in a couple beaches and a seamless and short drive over to the French side with its fine beaches and excellent dining, and it’s easy to see why Sint Maarten is so popular with American tourists. For me, it was all a little much and far less enjoyable than nearby Saba and Anguilla, which were more authentic and tranquil.
