At the northern tip of the South Island, Picton is an attractive but bland town that serves best as a stopping point on the way to or from the North Island or for exploring the nearby Marlborough Sounds and for visiting the Marlborough wine region. One of the few things I wish I had done and didn’t while in New Zealand is hike the Queen Charlotte Track, a multi-day hike that emanates near Picton. Other than using Picton as a base for such a hike, I really can’t recommend spending more than a day or two here as there are simply much more interesting places further south.
