One of the few places in the world with active geothermal activity, Rotorua makes the itinerary of nearly all tourists visiting New Zealand’s North Island. If you have never seen bubbling mud pools, geysers, and the like, you will be duly impressed with Rotorua. Even if you have seen them, it’s a worthwhile stop. However, be forewarned – Rotorua is not a nice place and is one of the few places in New Zealand where you need to be vigilant. Much like the underground thermal activity, there is an underworld of crime that permeates life in Rotorua, and more than one tourist has fallen victim.
