With nearly a third of New Zealand’s population calling it home, Auckland is far and away the country’s largest city. It wasn’t until my third visit that I actually had a decent time, and my guess is that the reason the city’s marinas are so full is that most residents dream of the day they can sail away never to return. Auckland may be a decent place to live and work, but it just isn’t a great place to visit. In fact, other than cruising the harbor and surrounding waterways, there isn’t much here I’d recommend. One of the problems with Auckland is that most of the city’s nightlife moved from the city to the suburbs twelve years ago never to return after a nine-month power outage. As a result, the city lacks any kind of a heartbeat and seems to suffer from the same suburbanization and lack of character that most American cities exhibit.
