Lying on the shores of New Zealand’s largest lake (Lake Taupo), Taupo’s main draws are its fishing and skydiving. The place has all the trappings of a typical tourist town and really has nothing special to offer outside these two activities. Still, it seems to be an immensely popular place, particularly with Aucklanders who no doubt take respite in the laid back atmosphere it offers. I found it to be a rather dull and characterless town, although the nightlife (typically beginning at Mulligans and ending at the Holy Cow) is fairly decent.
