Queenstown is the typical tourist town gone mad. A victim of its own success, what was probably once a quaint village located in a spectacular natural setting is now a typical tourist town with all the trappings. Fortunately, uncontrolled development hasn’t entirely blighted the magnificent natural landscape, and the area remains one of the most beautiful in all of New Zealand. And, unlike some other tourist towns, Queenstown makes no apologies for being what it is and doesn’t claim to be something it’s not. It’s overpriced and full of people who enjoy “safe” holidays doing controlled “adventure” activities and things as simple as enjoying an ice-cream cone by the lake. All in all, it’s a fun place to spend a week or so, particularly if the weather is nice and allows for some hiking in the surrounding mountains.
