The capital of South Australia, Adelaide seems smaller than its population of 1.1 million. It is a pleasant enough place, but walking around the city I couldn’t help but think that Adelaide was a place that had seen better days and that even at the best of times things never really were too great. In a way, Adelaide epitomizes most of Australia’s lesser known cities – at its heart, it is just a small country town but, due to its size, it attempts to be something more than it is, thereby losing much of its potential charm. It is probably a wonderful place to live, but from a tourist perspective Adelaide best serves as a base for exploring nearby attractions such as Kangaroo Island, the Barossa Valley, the Murray River, Flinders Ranges National Park or as a brief layover on the way to or from Western Australia or the Northern Territory.
