I arrived in San Juan weary and anything but excited about spending three months island hopping alone in the Caribbean. A two-hour delay in Chicago occasioned by George W. Bush’s presence at O’Hare had multiplied into a several hour delay that caused me to miss my connecting flight in Miami. After a long night in the Miami airport, I arrived in San Juan a day late and considerably short on sleep. But, like any worthy destination, San Juan revitalized and invigorated me. The colorful buildings and cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, the warm sun, the singing of mockingbirds and bananaquits, the effortless gliding of pelicans, the meandering forts, the refreshing snowcones, the fiery Latinas….everything about San Juan made me feel alive and thankful to be alive. |
