Once a Jock, Then a Lawyer, Now a Vagabond

Boyhood Dreams

One of my favorite paintings is one by Norman Rockwell titled "Boyhood Dreams." It shows a boy sitting on a fence, dog by his side, staring at a distant train. I imagine the boy is dreaming of all the far off places the train might have been and might be going and dreaming of the day when he is old enough to hitch a ride and see those places. At the same time, I imagine a boy on the train looking out at the lush landscape, perhaps seeing the other boy and his dog in the distance, dreaming of what it must be like to live in such a place. What follows are the chronicles of a boy who has hitched a ride on a train and is living his dream of seeing all the far away places he's only read and wondered about, but who, at the same time, continues to dream about what is and what might be as the train rolls along the tracks at a feverish pace.
