Pu'ukohola Fortress | sacrificial landing maybe? |
If you are a history buff or simply someone who appreciates human inginuity, this is the place to visit. Located in South Kohala or Kawaihae, Pu'ukohola sits right next to Spencer Beach Park. This area was once a stronghold for King Kamehameha I. Are you wondering how the fortress was built? In an amazing feat equivalent to the building of the pyramids, a 20 mile human chain was created stretching all the way over to Pulolo Valley. Rocks were passed from person to person to build the structure that withstood several earth quakes and volcanic eruptions. The fortress overlooks Pelekane, the shark bay. |

The Shark Bay It it highly unlikely for any shark to enter shallow waters in direct sunlight. However, this area is famous for black tip sightings. At times, they swarm in the bay and though they post little threat to humans, it is advisable not to swim here. Keep in mind there's a beach park right next door... | | |
