Hawaii Volcanoes National Park | Pu'u Pua'i through the keawe |
This is a must see site when visiting Hawaii. If you were stupid enough not to rent a car (only way around the island) there are tour groups that will take you out here. Contact them ahead of time because you won't find any walk-in places unless you spend lots of time looking.
The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will cost you $10.00 per car if you enter independantly and the pass lasts for 7 days. There were other rates when we pulled up to the main gate. Last time I entered the park it was still free. Ten dollars per car for seven days isn't bad though. When entering, you will find all points of access on the trails are free of charge and so are the exhibits. The only things you'll be paying for are food, drinks, and maybe a souvenier. I highly advise against taking tour groups here as you'll find limited time to do anything fun. The most you'll get is a look in the visitors center, the movie, jaggar museum, and a walk through the Thurston Lava Tube. |
| | Crater Rim Drive The Crater Rim Drive once wrapped around the Kilauea Iki caldera but some time in the 80's, parts of it fell in deeming it unsafe. Now, the parts that are still accessible are used for hikers to trek through between the Visitors Center and the Thurston Lava Tube.
In 2000, I came out here with some friends and got very dehydrated. On top of that, I got lost after I felt better. DO NOT forget to take liquids with you and eat something before you go. It's important to keep drinking water or a sports drink along the way. If you enter the caldera, make sure you are protected against the scorching heat. It may be cold at the Visitors Center but temperatures reach a little over a hundred degrees fahrenheit in the pit. It's a black waste land full of steam vents and sharp rock. You don't want to fall in or fall down. |

| | Exhibits I'm not really one for exhibits and I'd much rather be trekking out there than standing around with the old people looking at the same thing you can see out there. Here is an exhibit if you're interested... |
