The red fortress above the Tauber

A fairytale town located in the Franconia region of Bavaria. A couple hours of train travels away from Munich.

It's not in fact a part of my plan, but the lady standing at the entrance of the munich's main train terminal convinced me to see it. She's working with a travel agent and I bought a tour from her for the Nueschwanstein castle for that particular date but I changed my mind and set-off the castle tour the next day and took the Rothenburg instead just because there are other people going there already that morning and the Nuesch castle had only me - at Euro35 that includes a very well versed tour guide and train tickets to Rothenburg

After seeing the medieval town, am I so glad I decided to come. It was awesome, and maybe the next time, I will stay here for a week!

The enchanting small town looks to me like a disney or fairy tale setting come alive. Building structures are well preserved and they all looks the same, vary in colours and a little in designs.

Rothenburg can be included in your itinerary if you're in Munich. Travel by train - either with a group tour or alone - is easy. Trip takes about a couple of hours along a usual scenic route. Walk along the town's cobbled stones, but start by walking up the stairs on the only tower that is accessible by visitors to see the whole town from above.

Then walk you way around starting from the main central plaza.

At the end of the tour, you may opt to buy souvenir stuff like stuff toys and christmas items from several christmas shops and toy shops around - it's the town's specialty.

Nice photos of this historic town. I have never been to Rothenburg, though I know most other towns in the same valley from bicycle tours and have been to Weikersheim several times for open-air operas in the summer.

nice picture of the plonlein on your main page. the extra distance frames the scene beautifully.
