Iznik or Nicaea is situated near Bursa, so it is nice to swing around before proceeding to Bursa. Not a very large city to explore so I decided to spend 3 hours or so walking around the area after seeing the Hagia Sophia.
So a lil history here: Iznik is an important religious center in the Roman and Byzantine Eras.
The 1st and 7th Meetings of the Ecumenical Council were held here. The seventh Ecumenical council was prompted by the iconoclastic controversy and eventually led to the division between Rome and Constantinople. There are still many remains from the Ottomans and Seljuks and the town is laid out in Roman plan with four gates. . . |
| | The Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque in the year 1331 by Orhan Gazi .
I really wanted to see Iznik because of the "Nicene Creed" (or history?). When I was young I always hear the old folks in our neighborhood reciting that creed and when I grew older, only then I found out how it was called and its history.
So there I was wandering around the place where that Nicene Creed was originated. . . |
Such a small place with many remarkable sights.
And oh by the way, the lake was a breath-taking sight. | | |
