One Night in Bangkok. | Temple of the Emerald Buddha |
One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free You'll find a god in every golden cloister A little flesh, a little history I can feel an angel sliding up to me
One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble Not much between despair and ecstasy One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble Can't be too careful with your company I can feel the devil walking next to me .... Remember Head Murray's dance hit of the mid 80s? Everytime, I set my foot at Don Muang International Airport (Bangkok), the beats of this 80s hit keeps playing on my mind so vividly that sometimes am whispering the lyrics while on the bus on my way from the airport to my hotel in Sukhumvit. Bangkok or Krungthep (City of Angels) as it is known to the locals is a megalopolis, a fusion of cosmopolitan & traditional lifestyle. Placed second rank to Sydney in the list of World's Best Cities , and home to two of the world's best hotels. A lot of things instore for some visitors and maybe none for others, depends on how you explore and enjoy the sights & sounds of this bustling city that's packed with surprises in every corner - from the grand palaces to Wats (Buddhist Temples), monuments to parks, nightlife streets of Patpong to backpackers quarter in Khaosan - Bangkok has it all! My favorite destination in far-east asia. Just a trivia..... "ONE NIGHT IN BANGKOK" came from the musical stage play "Chess" written by two members of the famous singing group ABBA. . . . |
| | My first visit... ... was in the year 1999, twas actually a treat for my gorgeous eldest sister who says that fullfilment does not always lay on the concept of getting married .... i dunno if it's just an utterance of dismay on many marriages that didn't worked .... or ..... a justification of her pledging celibacy forever?
It was a scary start of a grand vacation. I arrived noontime at the hotel in Pratunam district (large market place) where I am supposed to meet my sister only that she was not there. I asked the hotel reception who haven't had the slightest idea where she was. I panicked and checked in anyhow to be able to use the phone and call our home and her office and (Yes!) the Tourist Police for information and blotter her disappearance (I suddenly remembered the thriller movie "Vanishing" of Jeff Bridges & Kieffer Sutherland). Just to find out later that she had joined the very early city tour right upon arrival which was a part of the package deal that she had purchased which included the airfare, hotel stay & city tour. Damn stupid me!
Anyways, all went well for the whole week and even extended some days more before flying to Bandar Seri Begawan. . . . |

| | 2006 September ........ Back in Bangkok! I flew in from Bangalore to Bangkok, no plans. I landed at the Don Muang International Airport...still, but, by this time (October 2006), the new huge and state-of-the-art, biggest in asia - the Suvarnabhumi Airport will already be operational. I always love this place, not that I always fit in because am also from the far east, but like a product on the market - Bangkok is so sale-able because of its marketing mix or product mix. Always have sumthin' for everyone. Too much things to see and do. The friendly people, smiling faces, yummy street food, lively nightspots, nice beaches, interesting sights, temples, and a shoppers paradise. Prices are so reasonable and you'll find all kinds of places to sleep that fits your budget. It's the first time I saw some people on the streets in Bangkok demonstrating during this visit. I guess there are some faces of Bangkok that's changing somehow... well.... it's still the same exciting Bangkok for me anyhow. |
