Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok: One of Bangkok's major hotels
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Satisfaction:
  • This place has a great location and a great lunch & dinner buffet (all U can eat!) Bangkok has 2 "above street" trains (call the Sky Train), and for about 1 US$, you can get around town. This hotel is located under one of the sky train stops - just look for the stairs that will take up to it. The sky train runs above the main street that this hotel is on, so you can't miss it. From this train, you can go to the river and take a boat up the river for dirt cheap.

The hotel has a 3 piece band (pianist, string bass and violin) in the afternoon and is completely classy. The lobby is filled with the theme of nature, with full size trees, water ponds and such. Downstairs is a great Italian restaurant/bar, which has a live band (5 people) in the evenings. The band that was there when I was there had 2 female vocalists, one or two male vocalists, and I was impressed (compared to the typical 2-3 pc band with 2 Philipino ladies that I've seen in other Chinese hotels - this was my first time to this country, so I wasn't expecting much.)

The room was great. The internet connection in the room was quite expensive, though. The bathroom had a large tub AND a shower stall (all thick glass). They give you 2 bottles of water a day, which I recommend you drink and take with you when you venture out. In October, it was in the mid-80's (degrees F).

Unique Qualities: The buffet was incredible. Plenty of fruit, breads, fish, with even a chef at the right side to prepare you if you wanted something "custom made", such as an omelet in the mornings, to sushi in the evenings. All you can eat sushi was what made my stay very nice!

It's "on both sides of a corner", but not exactly on the corner because there is a shrine there. There's also a McDonalds and Starbucks within walking distance, which I frequented! The Starbucks is just inside an indoor mall, and there's an ATM further inside, and towards the right.

The hotel does take American Express, and this is part of the Hyatt chain, so you can earn "miles" if you're a "member" of the Hyatt club, which is free to join. (Stay at enough Hyatt's as a card-carrying member, and you get credit towards a free room.)

Address: 494 Rajdamri Road, Bangkok, Patum Wan
Directions: I'll be back to better describe. It's under the Sky Train at one of the L-stops. The building is white and has a shrine at the corner. I gotta get this all out of my suitcase.

The Oriental Bangkok: On Bangkok's river, with good buffets
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Satisfaction:
  • I didn't stay at this hotel, however I did visit it 2X. This place has the Authors Room, where famous authors would come & stay while working on their novels. There's the famous Hemmingway room, which is off to the left and downstairs when you enter this hotel. There used to be a whole different lobby to this hotel, and that's where you have to go to find this area.

There was a Thai couple that had their wedding reception here on my second visit (in November). Very nice!

You can get off the ferryboat that goes up the river (and stops at the designated stops) but I forget which stop is the stop to get off at. (Map is still in the suitcase)

Unique Qualities: There are these giant wooden bells hainging in the lobby. Incredible.

There are 2 buffets: There's the Thai buffet, and there's the Seafood Buffet at the "sister" hotel across the river. There's a ferry that goes back and forth across the river from both of these hotels, and it's free! The bufffet was the most expensive food I've paid for during my stay, but probably the most eloquent.
