Culture-rich but neglected by tourists Svishtov used to be a rich Danube town with an important cultural life, but has been neglected for a long time now. The birthplace of one of the most famous Bulgarian writers, Aleko Konstantinov of 'Bai Ganio' fame, the first Bulgarian town with a theater, a privately funded university, houses with clear Viennese influence, originally a Roman settlement defending the Danube border... the town has a very rich past but has suffered from its location at the northern end of the Veliko Turnovo province and the competition from bigger nearby towns such as Pleven, Veliko Turnovo or Ruse.
Still, it is well worth a visit for the adventurous mind. |
