Eureka, Humboldt County, California | Eureka's waterfront on Humboldt Bay |
The small city of Eureka is located on the Pacific coast in northeastern California, situated between San Francisco and the Oregon boarder (closer to Oregon). We moved there in 1966 from Chico in the Sacramento Valley. While it is still the the closest larger town to our current residence, we no longer live there. |

| | Eureka - the old lumber & maritime town Logging has decreased greatly in this area but it is still part of the local area's history. One early lumber baron built this famous home know as the Carson Mansion which overlooks the Bay and "Old Town." It is probably the most photographed building in Eureka, but tourists can't go in. This ornate Victorian building is now an exclusive club with the present name of the Ingomar Club. It used to be "males only", but that hit the proverbial fan a few years back, so now select females are allowed to join this snobbish group. |
| Mad River area - "town" hidden by trees |
| | Where I really live is Mad River, Trinity Co. Our present home is in the remote mountainous community of Mad River, located just over the boarder of Trinity County. This is about 70 miles southeast of Eureka. While Mad River has its own post office and postal code (95552), it does not show up on the VT list of places. There is really not much to the town - just a post office, bar, tiny store and a small (but actually good) "burger bar" located in a trailer. Very few people actually live close to this location as this rural community is spread over many miles of mountainous terrain in both the Mad River and Van Duzen River drainages.
See my "Dinsmore" page for a photo of "downtown" Mad River. Dinsmore in another small unincorporated rural community just a few miles to the west of Mad River, but in addition to an outstanding rural store, Dinsmore can be found on VT's list of destinations! |
