Dinsmore, Humboldt County, California

Downtown Dinsmore

A local rural community - Close to where I live

Dinsmore is not much of a town, but it is one of the best places to stop when traveling State Highway 36 between Red Bluff in the Sacramento Valley and Fortuna on the north coast. Dinsmore is just a little over 50 miles inland from the coastal Highway 101. While it doesn't have its own post office (it's zip is from Bridgeville to the west), Dinsmore does have an outstanding small grocery, farm supply and general merchandise store. Beside the store is a 24-hr. automated gas station and a Laundromat. Just a few miles to the east, and across the county line in to Trinity Co., is the town of Mad River, which does have it's own Zip code (95552).
Entrance to the Dinsmore Lodge

The old historic Dinsmore Lodge

Across the highway from the store is the old Dinsmore Lodge which has seen much history (as well as better days). Rooms are still for let here and they have a trailer park off to the side. A paved Humboldt County landing strip is nearby - within walking distance to the east.
Downtown Mad River - So. Fork Mtn. in backgrd.

Mad River - Trinity Co. - Closer to where I live.

Just a few miles east of Dinsmore and across the county line is the tiny berg of Mad River. Here is a photo taken of "down town" Mad River in the fall of 2005. Its not a big place even for a remote mountain town. Here is located the US post office (Zip 95552), burger bar, tiny store & bar. The burger bar is much better that it looks at first glance. The Sportsman Lodge (which has seen better days) is hidden in the trees across the highway.

This community of Dinsmore/Mad River is very spread out with the K-12 public school, rural health clinic and community hall located a few miles away west of Mad River Ridge. Also in the neighborhood is the US Forest Service Mad River Ranger Station. The main tourist attraction is the Ruth Lake reservoir located several miles to the south of the tiny town of Mad River. South Fork Mountain ridge and the Lassic mountains are also interesting places to explore.

Pros:"Dinsmore is the best place to stop for fuel & supplies when travelin Hwy 36"
Cons:"Next good stop is a long way off."
In A Nutshell:"A small pleasant spot/stop on the map. Go on to Ruth Lake."
