Budapest is divided into two main parts by the river danube.

The "Buda" side (which is the old town) is quite hilly and uneven, but offers very nice views from the different hilltops. It is also very green and relatively "natural".

The "Pest" side (new town) is pretty flat and also the modern part of the city. Most of the hotels and shopping places are on this side of the city and this is also, where the "commercial life" takes place.
