There are some great places to visit in KL like the Batu caves, the bird park, butterfly house, aquarium, museum, the national Mosque, central market, little India and China town. All are easy to get to. Take a taxi, bus or monorail. We found taxis to be well priced and the drivers friendly. Of course there will be no seat belts in the back and he will drive like a maniac! Its all part of the Malaysia experience. Try to relax and enjoy. If you are going to walk it then grab a map at KL airport. I would however avoid dark streets at night.
Most places are cheap to get into but the dollars can start adding up by the time you add taxis, camera fees and drinks. If you are on a budget there are plenty of free places to visit such as the city park and National mosque. Most people speak English so that made things a little easier for us since we only knew the odd phrase.
KL is a bustling, very busy city. Lots of sky scrapers, fast moving pedestrians and cars moving at top speed. This can make crossing roads a bit life threatening event! Cross when the locals do as they have it down to a fine art!
The heart of the city is its shopping malls and restaurants but there are also some lovely parks and wildlife zoos.
KL is a great place to people watch, grab a drink in a sidewalk cafe and watch them go by. The population is made up of a diverse range of ethnic groups. This is especially noticeable in the clothing you see - from mini skirts to the full Had-jab. There is also the wide social economical differences. Be prepared to see beggars with twisted spins and other aliments lying face down is the streets begging for money.
The one thing I disliked about KL was the continuous spitting done by people. They think nothing of hacking up great wads of phlegm everywhere and this a common practice.
- Pros:A whirl wind city with many contrasts
- Cons:A bit too much smog for a suburbanite
- In a nutshell:Malaysia's melting pot
