Castle as viewed from rose garden - Shannon

Castle as viewed from rose garden

First stop from Shannon Airport Bunratty Castle Review

It is very convenient (almost on top of N18 near Shannon airport), reasonably priced, fun to explore, self-paced (we did not join a tour), includes a "village" of interesting (although somewhat similar) buildings, and a delightful tea shop for a bit of a rest after climbing the castle steps and walking the village. I was pleasantly surprised at how many rooms were accessible and how unobtrusive the staff were.

Inisheer Skyline - Shannon

Inisheer Skyline

Inisheer, Aran Island

The ONE sunny day that we had on this trip, we spent at Inisheer. And even with the sun shining brightly, it was very cold in the late afternoon waiting on the dock for the return ferry. But this was an experience that we would not have wanted to miss. Heather and Megan rented bikes and had a wonderful time 'exploring'. Sheila and I missed the horse drawn carts, so we took the 'Taxi'. The taxi was a somewhat aged Toyota minivan, and the driver was nice but seemed more intent on getting us around the island and back for his next fare, than in meeting our needs. We enjoyed meeting a local lady who was knitting and selling sweaters and caps from her home. The scenery was beatiful and even the shipwreck was interesting. Sheila and I walked more than we would have liked and the terain is fairly steep in places, but we enjoyed relaxing in he pub while the girls expended their energy on the bikes.

Cottage in village park near Bunratty Castle - Shannon

Cottage in village park near Bunratty Castle

Bunratty Castle Bunratty Castle Review

Very nicely restored castle, surprisingly close to N18 near the Shannon airport. You can explore most of the castle via narrow spiral stairways. The garden, village around the castle is worth your time as well... Historic value is high and commercialism is minimal, we enjoyed it very much.

Address: N18 Near Ennis

Directions: It lies in the centre of Bunratty village (Irish: Bun RĂ¡ite), by the N18 road between Limerick and Ennis, near Shannon Town and its airport
