If I had only one day to stay in Beijing, I'd go to Summer Palace. It is wonderful place, full of history and willows. But we had plenty of days - about 2 weeks and yet it was too short to really go into all the details.
Beijing is all contrasty place - historic buildings and philosophies are now confronted with ultra modern design executed by foreign architects and trade. In a place like that... it feels at times hectic.
Maps redrawn every few months, they say. Yeah... there are huge developoment projects running now.
Olympic greens... can't avoid to notice its similarity it with huge squares such as Tian an men. It is all about perception of matters.
However, Beijing is architect's playground. You are amazed. Newest design and technology drags you to explore its buildings whcih mushroom from many corners, replacing.
New airport... largest in the world, they say.
However, we had not been only on deprature platforms but were for some reason exploring its offices in strange arrangement of corridors and dead ends in its 'airline offices' deparment.
What a place. Its design here at that part is just failed! It's way too complicated to find anything. You end up into dead ends a way too often and there's just plenty of passages behind closed doors. How would you at most urgent points find closest exit from here? I really didn't understand why this was designed so! How could be ever built in that way. Didn't they think of their staff and potential visitors.
On the other end, there are (were) Arts of War.
For one reason or another... if you want to understand military power of modern China you can see it exhibited in famous Military museum; the building itself is remarkable example of real socialist architecture.
