"not often on tourist path" Kosovska Mitrovica by picek

in the heart of Mitrovice... market and mosque, people come together and do business - every day the same rythm. Liveliest part of city, which is on the other hand so divided (between Kosova and Serbian ethnic groups) that one is not encouraged to cross the river to 'mingle with 'strangers' or 'others'. Ah, what a world!
Well, in my brief stay I spoke english and serbian with people here and didn't encounter any problem - they didn't stop talking to me because I used Serb language like one may think. But younger people don't learn this language - then english becomes more useful.

Market will be best place to buy CDs and tapes, clothes, vegetables, spices... like many local markets in the world, yet with its Southern atmosphere and sense of commerce.
There is broad cheese and milk section with its distingushing odour, and farmers from mountains come here to sell their home made products! Let me just say that cheese from Balkanese regions is the best in the world, especially sheep and goat cheese in variety of forms, and this tend to be healthier than cow cheese ... cow cheese (Swiss) fan, forgive me :)

old and new

...on the corner of city street old traditional house and new one share the same wall.
don't ask about construction standards, they seem to be very low.

Like just about anywhere else in Kosovo, there seems to be tendency to replace old tradtional architecture with new one that looks like elswhere in Europe (especially in 'transitional' countries). So, build large and forget about old!
Yet, those old houses are interesting, in a way much nicer than those which replace them with speed of light. They say of spirit of the place, of traditions that were kept.
