Who says anything about Ratece (originally written with 'v' above letter c - so it sounds like Rateche)? Well, in fact everybody speaks of Planica, the queen of the ski jumping and ski flights competitions, in the valley of Northwest Slovenia, very close to Italy and Austria.
Some people (honestly - many) visit it ritually, and competitors are encouraged by the crowd to jump as far as they can.
So far, they have reached some 230 meters!
I always wanted to see how it looks from the first hand to be in Planica... so we went there to watch flights: it is a far drive for us, but I say nothing because there're so many Norwegians, Polish, Czechs... who travelled even much much further than us.
What a great atmosphere those people make when are when they cheer up in the crowd and they bring a reindeer with them (the artificial but large nevertheless), then they jump, drink and get half naked despite the snow and cold.
It's all positive atmosphere for few days and people pour in thousands.
Yeah, fans brought together from many winds - the air is filled with excitement during the competition.
Men fly like eagles before they land on the bottom of the valley, a thrilling 'game' to watch. As well, booze run in the stream -that happens too and some are not too proud of that public face (well, then what can you do - it's folklore, they say).
In general, it seems all people trully enjoy it altogether and any good jump has been rewarded by loud ovation!
Ovation, ovation! Let them fly and let them dream.
Don't come too late, the parking can be problem. But if you want you can walk a few kilometers or take bus.
Be patient when leaving the area because it is really crowded. Follow the instructions from attendants, security or police.
Bring your own snacks if you want to save some money. Warm tea in thermoflask is excellent.
Probably no need to say that warm clothes is needed, especially in afternoon when sun hides behind mountain quite early.
There's market with souvenirs and stuff to support competition, but hey... piece of plastic is really overpriced. And they don't know about bargaing here.
Watch your belongings - although not many crime, but when crowds there are all kinds of people too. Many nice and some evil.
Take trash back with you or dispose it in the bins. Some people really have no manners when they thow trash whenever they please, even if they stand next to the bin. It takes weeks to clean the place properly, so why not showing some care and respect to the place.
The toilets are plastic -movable and plenty, they try to supply it with the toilet paper regularly but with so much people it's natural that they run out it too... so, have some with you for emergency. Also wet tissues (degradable) are welcome because it's hard to find running water for washing hands.
People help themself with 'smuggled' alcohol (jagermeister, wodkas) which I understand and have no problem with that under condition that they don't leave the glass bottles lying on the floor. Otherwise, on the entry they check your bags for glass bottles - plastic ones are okay.
