"in Zrmanja river canyon" Obrovac by picek

Obrovac Travel Guide: 0 reviews and 3 photos

We often passed Obrovac when driving state road from North Dalmatia towards Plitivce and Karlovac - yet it was always too early (or too late to stop).
We had a brief stop in June, but it was just before the rain and heavy clouds were gathering at the sky and wind blew away the papers. Just above our heads.

As you probably know, the gigantic industry was planned for Obrovac but the result was disastrous with huge amounts of money lost and environmental degradation. The bauxite factory only worked for a few years and it is synonym for one of the biggest strategic mistakes in ex-Yu history. Virtually lost investition and serious threat for nature in the Karstic rock.

As you take steps through its centre, you'll see many deserted old houses and town had a large price to pay during the latest war.
Now, it begins to revive... and it serves as a starting point for trips on Zrmanja river - either by boat or by kayak or rafting.

Indeed, that's something we are still waiting to do and we'll come back.

It does appear are one of the most interesting Dalmatian towns with very specific location within unique riverine landscape, nestled among the rock, mixing old and older architecture, pain and beauty, hopelessness and hope.

View typical for the towns: an old house and large oleander in full bloom at the court. Yet the people seemed hiding in their homes but maybe just because of rain promise!

And few minutes after, dark clouds became darker, gathered upon desterted homes.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:very interesting town not yet discoverd by tourists
  • Cons:ex-industry pose a threat
  • In a nutshell:definitely a place to see and go for Zrmanja!

Yeah, they look abandoned. I just like the ones in the first pic. The other ones are ugly. Looks like they used to be colorful, but they have deteriated.
