  • Although Daisen is a very popular place to skii in the winter time, Daisen does offer a nice alternative, as well! I traveled here in the summer, so there was obviously no one skiing, but being here in the summer proved to be a good experience for a different activity.
If you take a walk on the trails, you will find Daisenji Temple, which was originally built 1200 years ago, but due to fires, the current Daisenji Temple was built in 1951. The Jizou-Bosatsu is also on the trail. The jizou is said to lead dead souls out of hell (the Rikuro) and up to heaven. If you want a special blessing, sprinkle some water onto the statue!
All of the temples, shrines, and other natural and man-made sites make Mount Daisen a walk to remember!

  • In Japan, Daisen is known for having the largest "gongen-zukuri" roof, located on the Ogamiyama shrine, and the longest natural stone road (picture) in the entire country.

Nice tips on a beautiful area of Japan. Unfortunately I haven't found any pics from 30 years ago when I stayed at Ubara onsen nearby.
