"Climbing Kompirasan" Kotohira by Rabbityama

Kotohira Travel Guide: 14 reviews and 37 photos

Kotohira is home to one of Kagawa Prefectures most famous sites; Kompirasan Shrine. It's well-known throughout Japan as an important Shinto shrine and perhaps equally well-known for the many steps that it takes to reach it from the bottom!

To be honest, getting to the main shrine is not so bad; it's the climb to the highest part of the shrine that is really tiring and contributes many additional steps!

There was a light misty rain when I visited, but I think it actually enhanced the experience. Mist has a way of making you really feel the spirituality of such sites and of course makes the natural surroundings more scenic! The shrine was not too crowded when I visited either, so it gave the feeling of genuinely finding a mountain shrine in the countryside (especially after passing the main shrine) rather than feeling like just a tourist site.
