The Grand Canal is unavoidable, no matter how you arrive to Venice. Take a vaporetto (local bus/boat) and get to your hotel, or just travel the great channel and admire the magnificent palaces all along.

It's quite expensive to ride a gondola in Vencie but if you can afford it, do it. Otherwise, just enjoy the beauty of these pieces of true craftmanship.
