Very nice in the summer, and the winter as well. I always have trouble with my non meat eating friends so this is just a good friendly place

Favorite Dish: From Carpaccio for meat eaters to vegetable delights for the others all is cool ici.

    Le Sainte Marthe: Charming terrace

The ambiance on a summer evening when the sun sets late at night is just wonderful. The neighborhood is in transition so you get a nice mix of new trendies and people who've been there for ever. Check out some of the side streets near by as well.

The service is friendly and it's not overly frequented by tourists.

Please note that they do not take credit cards and plan accordingly.

Favorite Dish: Tartine d'os à moelle with fleur de sel: translation: beef marrow on toast with natural sea salt.

This is surprisingly good starter, so don't be afraid, try it. And, it's only 4 euros.

Da Lat: My favorite Asian restaurant in Paris

I've been coming here for years. It's inexpensive, open late (til midnight) and lots of Asians eat here too. The food is mainly Vietnamese Thai and there are lots of choices on menu. For those on a budget looking for good non-pretentious Asian food.

    Restaurant Da Lat
    120 rue Fbg du Temple
    75011 Paris 11

    Téléphone : 0143382272

Favorite Dish: My daughter always has the nems and I just love the Papaya salad. Most of the Asians that eat here seem to get the giant bowls of Pho which are a huge meal in themselves.

This is the café that started Oberkampf, I moved there in 1996 and it was just a typical working class neighbourhood. Not so any more, it's young, it's fun, there are lots of interesting restaurants and shops on the streets around.

Café Charbon was the first and for that it deserves a special mention.

Favorite Dish: The menu changes frequently, as I am a tartare lover that is what I usually get. Every time I've eaten there it's been good and they do have a children's menu for 12.5 Euros.

You can go just to have coffee and drinks as well. Open from 9 am til 2 am.

If you want to make a night of it the Nouveau Casino is right next door and there is Cithea just up the street.

  • Restaurant Name: Chez Max

This is the spot for French Antilles cuisine (French west indies Guadeloupe and Martinique). It is composed of a takeout place/grocery boutique where you can buy all kinds of products from the Antilles, rum, exotic fruits and various specialities to take out, a snack shop for quick takeout food (try the bokit for 3 euros) and a restaurant, the hours are complicated but I will do my best:

    Takeout and boutique
Tuesday through Thursday 10 to 19:15
Friday and Saturday 9 to 19:15
    Sunday from 9 to12:15
(Closed on Mondays and Sunday afternoons)

    Restaurant for lunch
Tuesday through Saturday 12 to 15

    Dinner only on
Friday and Saturday night 20 to 23.
    (For group reservations 01 46 36 51 79.)

Favorite Dish: Everything is good here and people come from miles around. Try the colombo (chicken, pork or cabri (my favorite it's goat)) and the bokit sandwich from the snackshop is excellent at 3 euros. Dishes are served with either rice and beans or vegatables. The plaintains are excellent.

I haven't tried it but you can even order a stuffed suckling pig for your next party. Only 358.84 euros. Don't know how much advance you have to give but I'm sure it will be delicious.

L'Estaminet: Nice neighborhood place on Oberkampf

This is a friendly neighborhood restaurant in the tradition of rue Oberkampf. The menus are printed on chalkboards hung on the walls. It is a nice place to go for a friendly meal. The tables are really small and close together (this is common for Paris) so it is not the place for a romantic dinner for two.

There are lots of good wines that you can get and it is all traditional French. I recommend this restaurant 50% for the ambiance and 50% for the food. There is also a very small bar where you can get a glass of wine or whatever.

Please note that you cannot make reservations for the weekend and plan accordingly. Also no checks but they do take credit cards.

Favorite Dish: Kir Violette as a before dinner drink when you are deciding what to order. Most kir is white wine with Creme de Cassis but here they make one with Violet flavored liqueur. Very nice. (3 euros)

As a starter I like the beef marrow on toast. (starters from 6 to 8 euros)

For the main dish get the special of the day. I went again today with my new VT friend Hua Yon (fattyjulia on VT). She got the very delicious Lotte and gambas which was the days special. I decided to have the tartare but I must say it was not up to my tartare standards. The problem was that they prepare it before. I much prefer when I just get the meat and the additional extras and can mix myself. So avoid the tartare. (main dishes from 12 to 18 euros).

The fries that came with the tartare were good.

They also have really big salads for 11,50 (looked good).

For desert have the creme brulée or the chocalate thing they do so well (6 to 8 euros).

I'm always so on the look out for new and trendy that sometimes I just forget excellence and reliability...I've lived in Paris for a long time and this is just one of those places I keep coming back to...can't help it. I've tried others but nothing can compare and they deliver as well! on time and always delicious.

Favorite Dish: Everyone's always happy and this is where I got my b'day dinner from...Biryani with shrimp, cheese nan, everything with shrimp (crevettes), this is an excellent address!

Dong Huong: Great pho in Paris

Ok, so this is not the place for a romantic dinner for two but if you're in the mood for some good pho it's the place to be. They've even got a write up in the New York Times.

Just a side note but with all the pho fanatics out there why is there no special category?

Favorite Dish: Pho, pho and more pho. The grilled meats with rice are good as well. And don't forget the weird florescent drink with tapioca bubbles and jello!

Lovely look at your hometown, Emily. Loved the restaurant tips, and the Ag Fair sounds interesting as well... sausagemakers, winemakers, cheesemakers. Merci. :)

I love your Paris pages. I used to live in Belleville when I was studying French more than 20 yrs ago. Your page brought back old memories:-D

Paris VT pages are always enjoyable, you're fortunate to live there. Now you have posed a problem for me: to next visit during the Agricultural Fair or the Salon du Chocolat! :))
