South Africa very much reminds me of Southern California. Beautiful coasts, mountain ranges, wine country, segregated neighborhoods, racial tensions, crimes. The good and the bad. I'd like to revisit this country later in life.
Here are some thoughts on travelling in South Africa.
It's not dangerous as people make it out. True, both violent and petty crimes are frequent. As a tourist, pay attention to your surroundings. Be aware of people around you. Be aware of your personal belongings. Do not go to places that makes your gut queasy. Carry yourself with an air of certainty. Then you should be fine.
Being a developed country with a paved highway infrastructure, relatively seasoned travelers should feel comfortable to rent a 4x4 truck and drive themselves.
The campsite are well developed with needed amenities. Some of the best I've ever seen. Camping is great and cheap alternative to hostels or cheap hotels. |

cleocat Wed Oct 25, 2006 21:04 UTC Amarula is a favourite. Glad you enjoyed SA. | Redlats Mon Aug 21, 2006 23:28 UTC I'll never be able to convince my wife to visit if "every single home has a security system sign outside stating Armed Response". We like Amarula in our house too. | Anchovy56 Tue Apr 4, 2006 20:13 UTC Va bene! You mean when you saw them. As Emily Latella (sp?) aka Gilda Radner used to say on a SNL skit "Never mind." | canuck68 Mon Mar 6, 2006 21:16 UTC I was interested in your SA tips. I have visited both South Africa and Southern California but can't find many similarities. Thanks, Diane |
