Akureyri... capital of the north. Akureyri is a freindly town in the north of Iceland. It is about 4-5 hours drive out of Reykjavik. Akureyri is the largest town in Iceland outside the greater Reykjavik area. (Greater Reykjavik includes: Reykjavik, Kopavogur, Gardabaer, Hafnarfjordur, Mosfellsbaer)
Akureyri is a very friendly town. During the summer it is frequently the warmest place to be in Iceland. Akureyri has a great botanical garden and the house of "Nonni" Jon Sigurdsson the writer, mayn people recognice the stories of Nonni and Manni from Akureyri, and Nonni's travels around the world.
If you have the time visit Akureyri. It is very nice and the people are very warm. Akureyri is know for it's service to tourists and is an excellent choice when planing your stay in Iceland.
