Oslo

Frogner Parken, Norway, 2004

Oslo, the Norway's capital, lies at the northern end of the Oslofjord and is located in the beautiful area, surounded by by green hills and mountains.

Oslo has been founded around 1048 by king Harald Hardråde. In the 13th century became the capital of Norway, but during the personal union with Denmark its role was reduced, as the king's seat was in in Copenhagen. In 17th century Oslo was consumed by fire and rebuilt by king Christian IV. After that event was known as Christiania. In 19th century, when the union with Denmark was dissolved, Oslo became the capital again. The original name of Oslo has been regained in 1925.

Oslo is one of two (the other one is Trondheim) my favourite Norwegian cities. This the oldest Scandinavian capital embodies the city elegance of the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th century: wide streets, solid buildings, parks, gardens and beautiful sceneries. One of the most enticing attraction are museums, which offer a lot of interesting and varied exhibitions. Oslo is spirited by many parks, cafes, street performers and festivals. It's something between small wooden cosy town and effervescent European city, and maybe that's why I love it so much! :D

I have visited Oslo twice during my trip to Norway in 2004 and from both visits I have very good notion and memories. I met many friendly, helpful and open people, no matter what stereotypes of Norwegians say! ;-) So I must admit Vikings are not so bad! ;-)

I strongly recommend you this city! It's worth to see it in every aspect! :-)

Take a look at my pictures from Oslo among my tips and in my travelogues: no. 1 , no. 2 , no. 3 , no. 4 :-)
