"Trondheim" Trondheim by arantha

Trondheim is the third largest city in Norway, located next to Trondheimsfjorden. Trondheim was founded in 997 by Viking king Olav Tryggvason. The first name of the city was Kaupangen ("Marketplace") and the short time after got the name Nidaros ("Mouth of the river Nid"). Trondhaim took important place in Norway's history as the seat of Archbishopric (since 1152) and the first assembly of Norwegian parliament.

Visiting Trondheim you must see the beautiful Nidaros Domkirke, which is the biggest in Scandinavia and the northernmost cathedral in the world. The second interesting places are the Archbishop's Palace, the Kristiansten Fortress and the wooden storehouses next to the Nidelven river, seen from the Old Town Bridge.

Trondheim is one of my favourite places in Norway, mostly because of the beautiful old wooden buildings, narrow streets and the amazing atmosphere of the norhern town.
