The Au Lac is a great hotel with excellent staff.
Easy walk to Buu Dien, Diamond Plaza etc. There is a Viet Travel next door, and ATM across the street, Ben Thanh market is a 14 min walk.
If you need a map, the bookstore on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai just across pasteur has them for 6000 vnd. Next to that, is a gift shop with girls who will wrap gifts for you. Around the corner is a viettravel agent and a airline ticket place
There are many cafes very nearby this hotel. Also you can walk around the block in the morning and get a variety of vendor type breakfasts. Or, just eat at the Hotel Restaurant with the free breakfast.
You can walk to coopmart, or com nieu sai gon from here easily. You can get a hamburger around the corner at Ban Mi Phuong Thao, or the Lotteria.
Its tall, so you can get up high away from the street if you like, and easy to find if you are lost.
The rooms are clean and modern. The laundry service is cheap. A shirt is 60 cents and you can have all your laundry back the same afternoon. I don't know if this is standard or just me. But I'm sure if you do need something laundered or pressed same day they will do it if you ask.
They have a beauty salon, and massage shop in the hotel as well
I get the cheaper (now $36) room which includes a free breakfast but "not drinking" I think this room type can be had with either one big or two small beds. The "2 small bed "rooms seem to be larger.
They have internet in the hotel, but only 3 stations so you might have to wait, but the location, hotel, staff, and price outweigh anything less that great about this place. They have wireless internet as well if you bring your own computer.
The beds are firm, which I like, but maybe its not your preference.
This is one hotel where your guests are allowed to come up to your room. If you have one or several girlfriends, they can also stay with you. Even if they are VN nationals. No problem. They just give their ID at the desk.
The staff is really friendly and they will look out for you. I've never stayed in a place with such good service.
Unique Qualities: Excellent staff.
Clean and safe. Once I fell asleep with my door cracked open. Left money and stuff lying around, never any problems.
If you need a taxi early the PetroMex next door is typically loaded with Deluxe taxis in the morning. Every time I've had to leave at 04:00am there was a taxi parked (sleeping) waiting for hotel customer apparently all night.

You can leave your key at the desk or take it with you.
Trinh, Minh, Ha or Linh will see you coming and have your key ready for you when you get in the door.
Unlike some hotels, the minibar is on a full time circuit.
