"Langde" Kaili by gifiltafish

A mere hour outside Kaili lies the little Miao village of Langde. Nestled in the mountains a few hundred people live simple lives far removed from the modern life around the corner. Well, save for the one satellite dish.

We arrived the eve before a government party was to arrive. The next afternoon brought a mock festival in their honor. Though my western nose instinctively turned up at the half-hearted show for cell phone chatting officials, I learned from one of the few mandarin speakers in town that their funding enables all the village children to attend university if they wish. Whether it was worth it all or not even the locals had yet to decide.
