TEBESSA (ancient THEVESTE) was an important Roman city, situated in extream eastern algeria, 40 km from the Tunisian border.
Wilaya (department) of tebessa is an agricultural region, but also commercial and becoming industrial these last years. It is also known for it's natural mining resources of iron and phosphate, the most important in Algeria.
Tebessa is the capital of the Wilaya, whose population is estimated to be 520 000 inhabitants. the population of the city is about 150 000 inhabitants.
The region of tebessa is also reputed for it's sheep and its splendid tradionnal carpets.

Thevest is the anicent roman name of Tebessa, the Roman ruins in the city (like The arch of Caracalla, temple of Minerve, the basilique, the theatre ..etc ) testify until now how important was Thevest in the roman empire.
