"Bir El Ater, the cradle of Aterian civilisation" Bir el Ater by eternel2002
Bir el Ater Travel Guide: 6 reviews and 16 photos
Bir El Ater is my home town in Algeria, I grew up here, it is a city of approximately 70 000 inhabitants, located in extream eastern Algeria a little towards the south, near the tunisian borders and just before the sahara.
Bir El Ater is the cradle of the Aterian civilization (the term aterien derives from el-Ater ) which was around 40000 - 20000 years BC.
It's also a mining city, 15 km south of Bir El-Ater, there is Djebel Onk phospates complex which is the biggest in Algeria to extract phosphates that will be shipped by train to Annaba port (300km up north) to be exported or used in the local industry.
After liberation of the commerce in Algeria on the end of the 80', Bir El-Ater became an important commerce center and favorite destination for those who want to buy imported marchandises from Tunisia, China, Turkey and some other countries.(Unfortunatly now there is less business activity than before)

Dommage, je ne suis pas passé à Bir El Ater mais à Chouchef-El-Yhoudi, en allant de Tozeur à El Oued! Je ne connaissais pas la doubara. C'est une sorte de chorba, si je comprends bien?
