The second inhabited island of the Maltese archipelago, Gozo is 67 sqkm in size and lies approximately 6 km northwest of the nearest point of Malta.
A ferryboat and a helicopter services are the only connections from Malta to Gozo.
Gozo's name changed during the centuries, from Gwl, the name of their particular sailing ships, how the Phoenicians probably called it, to Gaulos and Gaudos used by the Greeks and the Romans respectively and to the one of Gozo during the Aragonese and Castilian rule. Local population used instead the current Maltese name of Ghawdex.
Gozo has also a long and interesting history. According to legend, the island has a certain connection with Calypso as this is considered Homer's isle of Ogygia where the nymph held the Greek hero Odysseus her companion for seven years. She promised him immortality if he stayed with her forever, but was spared by God Zeus who demanded his release.
All roads in Gozo lead to the capital city of Victoria, also called by the locals Rabat. The ancient Citadel of Victoria, the site of a Roman temple, is the islands most important point of interest.
But Gozo has far much more to offer: megalithic temples, stunning churches, picturesque bays, natural wonders... |
