  • With its 6,500 inhabitants, Mellieha is considered one of Malta's largest village located in the northwestern part of the island.

Due to its large sandy beach, Mellieha is among the most popular tourist destinations during the summer months despite the fact that there's very little to do day or night, apart from the entertainment provided by the hotels, some bars and tavernas.

  • Mellieha Bay lies on the northern side of Malta island about 13km from the airport.

Othe two beautiful bays, Ramla and Paradise, are situated on both sides of Mellieha Bay.

The apartments located on the hill with the view of the bay are considered one of the most expensive in Malta, among the residents being ambassadors, business man and other rich residents.

  • The triumphal arch at the entrance to the Sanctuary courtyard was built in 1719, one year after the large pilgrimage to Mellieha organized by the Bishop Mons. Cannaves.

It is said that following this pilgrimage, after three years of draught it finally started to rain.

The triumphal arch is commemorating this event.

  • Surrounded by the sanctuary's walls, the small square at the entrance to the sanctuary is one of the most charming I've seen in Malta.

The square is also offering a wonderful view of the bay and sitting on one of the banks in the square cannot be other than relaxing.

  • We have entered the chapel through another small room, cut into the rock, with the walls entirely covered by interesting ex-votos and old icons.

In the room are also displayed beautiful decorations left from an old chapel that once stood on this site.

  • A narrow corridor is leading to the back of the chapel.

With a white arched ceiling and walls covered with marble, the chapel concentrates its best decorations on the altar part.

Everything gravitates around the famous icon of Madonna and child and the frescos and other paintings are meant to accentuate its value.

  • It is said that the famous Madonna and Child paint in Mellieha Sanctuary Cave was made in the year 60 AD by St Luke.

By that time, St Luke was accompanying St Paul to Rome and they were shipwrecked in Malta.

During his stay here, he painted this famous icon.

  • The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieha is one of Malta's most venerated Marian shrine.

Mellieha became a parish for the first time in 1436 and since then had an important role in the island’s religious life.

The parish church is located above the cave and the stairs located on the right side of the cave are leading to it.

  • Mellieha's parish church is obviously as impressive as most of Malta's churches.

The massive building made of yellow stone, raise its two sharp towers and the red dome up to the sky, making the church visible from far away
