One of Malta's most picturesque tourist destinations, Mellieha is home to some important Maltese attractions, so different one from another: the touching Sanctuary of the Madonna tal-Mellieha, Malta's largest sandy beach - Ghadira, the interesting St Agatha tower, also known as the Red Tower, and the Popeye Village, the set of the 1980 film Popeye.
It's name probably derives from the Semitic root "m-l-h" which in Arabic means salt. The name was adopted because of the ancient salt-terns the Romans had established at Ghadira - the large sandy bay lying at the foot of the village. |
