This typical Flemish city was founded on the banks of river Dijle in the Middle-Ages and its most remarkable landmark is St. Rumbold's tower which can be found in the small town center. The tall tower, which can be easily seen over the low buildings, was left unfinished due to financial problems.
Still, beside this, in the town center can be also found other beautiful old buildings such as the former Palace of Margaret of Austria or the Town Hall.
Mechelen had its glorious period in the first half of the 16th Century when Margaret of Austria set up her court here. But shortly after, the court was again moved to the most important city of Belgium, Brussels.
Nowadays, Mechelen is still the religious capital of Belgium, the Archbishop of Belgium having his residence here.

Very impressive, the photos and descriptions of Saint Rumbold's. I enjoyed my visit to yoru Mechelen page, Diana.
The Cathedral is very beautiful here in Mechelen = a very pretty place - I like to wander of the beaten path - you discovered some gems here
