Located in Roskilde Amt (Roskilde County), just 50 km west of Copenhagen, the small city of Roskilde is one of Denmark's oldest cities.

Roskilde was founded during the Viking Age by King Harald Bluetooth and became the capital of Denmark and an episcopal residence during the medieval period.

After 1400 is role was transferred to Copenhagen.

Roskilde Cathedral, the famous burial place for the Danish royal family, the Viking Ship Museum opened in 1969 with an exhibition of ships from the Viking Age in Scandinavia, an art gallery and a workshop for art craftworkers located in the harbour, the lively market square and the Roskilde Festival are just some of Roskilde's attractions.
Roskilde famous Cathedral was the first Gothic cathedral in Scandinavia built in red bricks.

The building works of the cathedral were initiated by Copenhagen Bishop Absalon around 1170 and the kept going for two centuries.

During the years numerous porches and chapels have been added to the main building in order to accommodate beautifully adorned sarcophaguses of the Danish Kings and Queens.

Since 1995 Roskilde cathedral has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Great virtual tour over impressive interiors of the Roskilde Cathedral. It's always great to visit former capital cities! What about former capitals of Romania? :-)

The Cathedral really is wonderful, and truly fit for the resting place of Danish kings and queens. Well done. Also thank you so much for visiting my Brugge pages, one of my all-time favourite European cities.
