Beside the main islands Malta and Gozo, the smaller and wilder, but still inhabited by 4 persons, Comino (or Kemmuna) Island is situated right in the middle of the channel that separates the first two.
The first evidence about Comino is dating from the 13C when the island became a parish centered on the chapel of Our Lady’s Return from Egypt, which can be still visited today on the island.
Pirates' shelter for some centuries, Comino was fortified by the Knights who swept the pirates away and built St Mary's Tower and St Mary's Battery.
Comino is only 2km long by 1.7km wide and its natural attractions are unspoiled by the bustling traffic although on the island is located a modern and quite exclusive hotel.
Comino's main attraction, the so called Blue Lagoon, with its transparent, cyan waters, is one of the most spectacular sights of the entire Maltese archipelago and attracts thousands of tourists every day. |
