sea walking: Alexandria Cornish
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the way from Quait-Bey Fort to Bibliotheca Alexandrina you can take a nice walk on Alexandria’s Cornish.
The modern Cornish is margined on one side by buildings and stores with an European architecture and on the other side by Mediterranean Sea
It feels like walking in an African Cannes.

  • Looking for St. Mark Cathedral in Alexandria was a real adventure as the Muslims are not really aware of the Christian sites in their town.
We were initially directed to St. Mark College but this was not the place we were looking for.
Still, inside the huge building of this Christian college you can find St. Mark Collegial Church, an elegant Latin church.
The college is managed by French monks from the Brothers of the Christian Schools order (Freres des Ecoles Chretien).

  • St. Mark Cathedral in Alexandria, called the Copte-Orthodox Patriarchate, is quite difficult to find in the narrow and crowded streets of the city center.

Actually it’s better to ask for "Mar Morkous" direction, St. Mark name in Arabic.

The Saint Apostle and Evangelist Mark, the one that spread the Christian religion in Egypt, came to Alexandria around 48 AD and hide until he was captured and killed by the god Serapion advocates in 68 AD.

The pagans tied him on a horse tail and let the horse run on Bokalia streets in Alexandria for two days, until he died.

His saint relics are worshiped in three important cathedrals in the world, located in Alexandria, Cairo and Venice.

In a crypt on the southern part of the church are buried all Alexandria's patriarchs, from St. Mark the Evangelist on.

Off The Beaten Path: Montazah beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • As an alternative to a nice and calmly walk in Motazah Gardens you can try one of Alexandria's beaches.

The local people say that among the numerous beaches in town (Montazah, Asafra, Miami, San Stefano, Gleem, etc.), Montazah beach is the best one.

Thus if you want to taste of Mediterranean Sea on Egypt shore, don't miss Montazah beach.

Entrance fee: LE 11 (USD 2-).
